UPS tracking number example & format

You should fill the form correctly without mistakes to track UPS parcel. How many digits does it have:

  • If it is a domestic package within the United States, UPS tracking number will usually start with “1Z”. Then it is followed by a 6 character shipper number (numbers and letters), a 2 digit service level indicator, and finally 8 digits identifying the package (the last digit being a check digit). In total it turns out 18 characters.
  • If it is an international package, UPS tracking numbers are also 18 numbers long.

However, UPS tracking number can be appeared in the following formats:

  • 1Z9999999999999999 (the most common);
  • 999999999999;
  • T9999999999;

UPS tracking results: status meanings

Tracking by UPS can show one of the following statuses:

  • Label Created;

This means that UPS has already received some information from the sender of the shipment (the shipment details and billing — in particular). The status will be updated as soon as company has received the parcel and sent it for delivery.

  • Shipped (the same as “On the Way”);

This means that the shipment is moving through the UPS network. At this stage, in addition to the status, you can also see scheduled delivery date.

  • Out for Delivery;

This means that the shipment has achieved the local UPS facility and has been dispatched to a driver for the final delivery.

  • Delivered;

This means that UPS has already delivered the shipment to its final destination. If your parcel is delivered but not received, try to find it. Sometimes UPS drivers leave shipments in a safe place nearby (for example, it can be front porch, side door, back porch or garage area, etc.).

  • Delivered to a UPS Access Point;

This means that you package has achieved selected UPS Access Point location. From this moment you can picked up the shipment at your convenience.

  • Transferred to Post Office for Delivery;

This means that you need to wait for an extra day or two for final delivery. It might be connected with transferring to the local post office by the sender request.

  • Exception.

This means some unexpected errors which may result in a change in the scheduled delivery date. Exact reason for that will be noted in the Shipment Progress section of the Tracking Detail page. You should wait until status update (as well as a new date).

Other statuses

UPS clients also can meet with unpredictable delivery cases. It may be the reason of the following statuses:

  • Delay.

This means that your package delivery has been rescheduled for the next business day. Most of these delays are due to an emergency situation or severe weather condition.

  • Update (with yellow triangle).

This may mean that the actual delivery time has exceeded the estimated time. In such cases you must wait for a status update or contact UPS Support.
